The Water Crassula

The watercrassula (Crassula helmsii) is a 5-25 cm tall plant of the succulent family (Crassulaceae). The plant has adapted to life in the water. Another Dutch name is herb needle.


The plant has three growth forms: a land form, a form that grows on the water bottom and a form that grows in the upper water layers. Therefore this water plant capable in many environments to grow, even in pools that dry up regularly.


The plant is originally from Australia. When it comes exotics plants in Europe. Although there are reports coming from England that it behaves as needle grass is an invasive species, the species in the Benelux as yet rare in the wild - despite its popularity as garden pond plants.


Being a tropical plant, has the watercrassula no seasons. This keeps the plant grow in winter, provided the plant does not freeze. Under water is usually not a problem. This is a pond plant that winter stays green.
