Açacurana

The Açacurana is a species of tree of the legume family, Fabaceae. It is known by many common names like "Bucharest", "Mulungu" and "pig." The açacurana has the largest distribution of any species Erythrina, is the only one found in both the New and Old World. She grows on the seashore and river banks in tropical Asia, Oceania, the Mascarene Islands, Madagascar, Africa and the Neotropics.

Açacurana is a deciduous tree with thorny storied cork and orange flowers of course. His storied cork legume reaching 20 cm in length and contain the seeds brown. Seeds are buoyant, allowing them to disperse across the oceans. The tree is well suited to coastal conditions, tolerant, both flooding and salinity.

Like many other species of the genus Erythrina, açacurana contains toxic alkaloids that have been used for medicinal value, but are poisonous in larger quantities. The most common alkali or erythrite is Eritrea, which is named for the genus.

The new shoots and leaves are eaten as a vegetable. The easy to grow and attractive flowering tree is grown as an ornamental shade. It is a common shade tree in cocoa plantations. Attracts hummingbirds that pollinate their flowers. Açacurana is the official flower of the Venezuelan state of Trujillo.
