Physostégie Virginia

The physostégie Virginia (Physostegia virginiana) is a herbaceous perennial native to North America

Description

It is a rhizomatous plant that measures between 0.5 and 1.5 m in height. The dark green linear leaves are opposite and toothed. Flowers pink or purple are grouped in terminal spikes and bloom from the base.

Flowering occurs in late summer, usually in August and September. The English vernacular name, "Obedient plant" (obedient plant) is that the flowers when they are displaced laterally, do not resume their original position.

Culture

The physostégie Virginia is grown in ornamental gardens, particularly in perennial borders. There are many cultivars, some with white flowers or variegated leaves.

It is not demanding and grows easily in any garden soil in sun or partial shade. This must be checked, because it tends to become invasive. It must also avoid too fertilize.
