Latua pubiflora

Latua pubiflora (syn. Latua Venenosa Phil.), also called the sorcerer's tree, a species of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). It is the only species of the genus Latua. It is endemic in the coastal mountains of southern Chile.

Latua pubiflora grow as 20-10 meters height attained shrubs or small trees with one or more main stems that can reach a diameter of 3-25 cm. The plant is equipped with rigid, up to 2 cm long spines occupied, which are in the leaf axils. The leaves are on petioles 2 mm long, the leaf blades are hairy, 3-12 cm long and 1.5 to 4 cm long, elliptic to oblong-elliptic, the tip is sharpened long, the leaf base is tapered to. Stomata only on the underside of irregular distribution found.

The flowers are individually to 50-20 mm long, felted flower stalks. These arise from the axils of the spines of a shell from the overlapping scales. The magenta-colored to red, urn-shaped crown has a length of 3-4 cm and a mean diameter of 1.5 cm. The outside is covered with dense hair. The Corolla lobe is relatively short, as wide as long or slightly wider. The stamens are about 8 mm from the base crown with fused petals. They are slightly beyond the corolla-tube at the lower end they are hairy. The dust bag is about 2 mm long and fused at the base with the filaments. The seeds are dark brown to black and about 2 mm large, relatively thick, slightly longer than wide. Inside, a curved embryo, the cotyledons are shorter than the rest of the embryo.
