Glorious

Gloriosa is a genus of the family colchicaceae (phylogenetic Class.), originating in tropical Africa and Asia. Since according to the traditional classification, however, should be attributed to the Liliaceae, the plant is called again, sporadically, climbing lily. This is also the national flower of Zimbabwe (Rhodesia).

Features

Typical of this plant is the presence of a tendril at the tip of the leaf: strange thing for a plant of monocots, the glorious fact is climbing. It is valued for its unusual beauty of the flower has six tepals yellow and red or orange with wavy edge.

Loses its leaves during the winter season (the dry season through the land, the cold in temperate countries). The underground tuber retains a reserve of energy to use for the next life cycle. All plant parts contain poisonous colchicine.

Cultivation

The little plant prefers sandy soil and exposure to sun is not too strong. He needs to grow support, albeit modest, which may determine the thin tendrils.

At our latitudes is mainly cultivated as a plant pot, since it is sensitive to winter frosts. From autumn tuber, now devoid of leaves, can be wintered indoors in a cool place.

The multiplication can be attempted by dividing the tubers and dry thoroughly sides exposed to air after the cut.
