Woad (plant)

Woad (Isatis) is a genus of the family Brassicaceae. The genus Waid (from Old High German far: related to Latin "vitrum" ['woad', 'to Blaufärben used plant', 'blue', 'bluish glass']) includes about 50 species, mostly native to Central and Southwest Asia are.

Features

It is one, two, or several years, mostly hairless herbs with erect branched panicled growth. The leaves are elliptic at the base, usually to oblong, sessile along the stem axis and heart-shaped to ovate-oblong.

The inflorescences are many flowered panicles, the yellow, white or purple flowers have six stamens, the very small anthers are ovate or oblong-round. Per fruit forms a brownish, oblong-round seed.

Because of their highly variable morphology can be determined especially the Asian species is difficult, as the only reliable diagnostic feature is the ripe fruit.
