The flowers are all ligulate bits. The distinction with other related genera is in fruits and bracts: fruit are of two kinds, those from the edge of the capitulum different from those in the middle. They have a tuft of hair worn by a non-smooth beak. The bracts are numerous and narrow.
The species most known and most spectacular Tolpis barbata, the bearded trepan in peripheral ligule ligules pale yellow and purple or brown plants, sometimes called eye of Christ.
The scientific name may correspond to Tolpis tolupê Greek, meaning a ball of wool, referring to the long outer bracts of crested Tolpis barbata or fruit.
