Applications
A number of species in the genus Vernonia, for example, V. calvoana, V. and V. colorata amygdalin, which is eaten lövgrönsaker. Common names for these species is in English bitter leaf, ewuro, Ndola and onugbu.
They are common in countries in West and Central Africa. They are very common in Cameroon cuisine, as the main ingredient in the national dish Ndola. The leaves have a sweet and bitter taste. They are sold fresh or dried and are the main ingredients in egusisoppa.
Species
The species of the genus growing in South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and North America. Vernonia species are known to those of similar species hybridises readily. There are around 1000 species of Vernonia.
